What is the best way to get rid of adult acne?
I really thought that I would out grow acne but alas, at 36 I still have it. It is not limited to my face though. Arms, back, chest, and face have acne of varying degree. The worst areas are my back, chest, and neck.

I use to have bad acne but I have some tips that worked REALLY well on me ad hopefully will work on you
Don’t be fooled by the scams you see on TV. Things like proactive don’t really work (Well, didn’t work on me anyway).
Keep yourself very clean. Things like Netrogena Oil Free Acne Wash can help with this.
Don’t put any moisturiser, make-up or sunscreen with oil in it on your skin. Acne is mostly made up of oil so putting oil on your skin makes it much worse.
Stay away from fatty foods that are high in oil. These can make the acne worse.
Really, for very severe acne the best treatment is a trip to the dermatologist (skin doctor). They prescribe effective, efficient treatment that really works. To go to the dermatologist you need a reference from your local doctor.
I hope I could help. These tips worked on me, I hope they do on you.
I struggled with acne since I was a teen – it’s very frustrating and embarrassing. I had minor facial acne but struggled more with the "bacne" as it’s called – the acne on my chest, back, arms, neck, etc. I tried everything out there but still struggled. I even tried the dermatologist but that didn’t help either. Now, I’m 38 but I figured out what works for me…here’s what I suggest. Everyone is different but I hope you find something that works for you.
First, you really don’t need to spend a lot of money on skin care. You just need to find the right products that work for you. Some swear by proactive, some say it’s too drying (this was my experience). The most important thing to remember is to use something that your skin responds to and that doesn’t include any fragrance or oils. Also, stay away from anything that has alcohol in it as this can dry your skin causing it to produce more oil, causing more acne.
For your body acne:
make sure you cleanse at least once a day. Don’t overdo it here (sometimes people shower more often thinking they’ll get rid of the acne by washing it away – you can actually make things worse if you strip away too much of your natural oils because your skin will respond with making more oil – causing more acne.) If, however, you sweat a lot, you may want to wash your skin again (even it it’s just with a wash cloth) – for instance, after playing sports, etc.
Second, I also use this method on a daily basis:
a water / vinegar solution 1:1 ratio Apple cider vinegar is good but you can use regular vinegar as well. I use a 1:1 ratio but you can use less vinegar if you’d like (depending on how bad your breakouts are). Put it in a spray bottle and spray the problem areas at night before you go to bed then shower in the morning. If you normally shower at night, go ahead and still spray it. The "vinegary" smell should dissipate but you may still want to wash off with a wash cloth in the morning. This can be very helpful for your back. Gauge for yourself how often and at what strength you should use.
Lastly, I would also exfoliate on a regular basis. Exfoliating your skin will help remove dead skin cells that get trapped because of too much sebum (oil) on your skin – causing pores to get clogged…thus forming acne. I expect you have oily skin. With oily skin, you should exfoliate 3-5 per week. (If you have dry or sensitive skin, only once per week; Normal skin would be everyday.)
Regarding benzoyl peroxide: In order to get good results (for most people) is to use it on a consistent basis. Usually a 2.5% concentration works for most people if you use it daily. However, for back acne, this is hard to do because it will bleach clothes and hair. I think it works quite well for acne but I don’t use it for my back. Instead, I use the water / vinegar solution I mentioned above.
One last thing…regarding diet. There is a lot of debate about if diet contributes to acne. Some people notice that when they eat certain foods / drinks, their acne worsens. If you notice this, you may consider cutting back to see if it helps clear your skin. If anything, healthier foods will at least help heal you faster from whatever ails you. Also, drink as much water as you can to help flush out your system. Finally, if you tend to eat a lot of dairy, try cutting back and see how you respond. (Dairy seems to be a big factor for me so I’ve made adjustments to my diet but it took time for me to make those adjustments.) Take it little by little…don’t go all out all at once because it’s too much (in my opinion).
Over the years I learned that many things cause people to get acne into adulthood. But, take it from me, it is manageable. Be as consistent as possible with your skin care regimen and you should be able to keep your back acne at bay. I hope this helps you!! Good luck!!!
proactive is the best
Wash your face with soap and water twice a day. Do it everyday
Go to the dermatologist & ask for a prescription of Clindamycin Phosphate and Benzoyl Peroxide Gel. It comes in a generic tub and you use it in the morning after you wash your face, & you can put makeup over it and everything. & then for night time, right before you go to bed, ask for a prescription of Tretinoin Cream. Together these two products work like magic! I love them & I’m 15 & had the worst acne ever on my face. I have it on my back, chest, shoulders, and neck too but I haven’t found a product for that yet.. hope this helps!!!
Listerine as a toner and toothpaste to dry the acne…
I’m 27 and I had the same problems and had tried everything over the counter and even went to the dermatologist and she couldn’t help. I decided I was going to have to spend more than $5 on a decent skin care system. I tried Murad Acne system and surprisingly it started working within two days! After I ran out of the starter/sample kit, I went on ebay and bought it in salon sizes. The full sized bottles are pretty pricey so I would recommend amazon or ebay if you find that it works for you. You can get the starter kit at Ulta, Sephora, or at http://www.murad.com/acne-products.jsp. They have a mail system like ProActive so you can cancel whenever. Good luck!!! =)
