How effective is Tetracycline for acne treatment?
I was wondering if the antibiotic Tetracycline would be a safe bet for acne treatment/prevention. I realize that medicines can have varying effects on different people but in generel is this druf effective? Also I have read that this drug can cause yellowing of teeth Is this true? I heard that it only occurs if teeth are not fully developed, I am 17 and have already had braces(so im guessing my teeth are fully developed).

Acne can often be a very tough skin condition to treat, but there are multiple ways to attack it. While tetracycline is helpful for treating acne, the best method for curing acne is to treat it aggressively with multiple simultaneous approaches.
In addition to taking an antibiotic, I would try to use a skin cleansing system like ProActive or any other creams that contain benzoyl peroxide. Also, although many studies do not show a link between acne and diet, I would also try modifying my diet by avoiding too much greasy food.
If you have severe acne that could potentially cause scarring, and other conventional treatments are unsuccessful, I would consider using isotretinoin (Accutane) as the last resort.
Yes it will work well and you won’t have to worry about your teeth.
Hi there…
I have filled many scripts with Tcycl for acne treatment yes, probably as many, if not more than, for Accutane. Since acne is at root a problem with sebacious gland-loving bacteria, an antimicrobial is a good choice, but of course, there are difficulties associated with it.
Yellowing of teeth is only a phenomenon observed with pre-natal mothers taking Tcycl – Their infants often have that greyish/yellow band along the top of their permanent teeth. It will not be a concern for you at 17, unless you plan to get pregnant any time soon.
In general though you should see a physician for a proper Scrip. There are a lot of reasons why someone would not want to take either accutane or Tcycl, and if you just use someone else’s left over Tcycl you can wreak some havoc upon your immune system. Don’t do it.
Short answer: yes Tcycl is Rx’d and indicated for acne treatment as is Accutane (Isotretinoin).
100% ok
