22 Ways to Get Rid of Acne
Whether you’re a teen or an adult with acne, you don’t have to simply put up with it. Here are 21 ways to get rid of acne.
1a. Don’t pick, press, rub, pop, or otherwise manipulate your pimples. If you do, you risk spreading the bacteria and increasing the chances of scarring.
1b. If a pimple has "come to a head" (the top of it is white, yellow, black, or green), then you can usually get it to open up & clean out naturally by applying a hot compress. Put a washcloth with hot water, as hot as you can stand without getting burned onto it, and let it sit there till the washcloth cools.
2. Use an over-the-counter product containing benzoyl peroxide once or twice a day. It helps break up the plug of dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil that clogs the pore and forms an acne blemish. And it cuts down on the bacteria, too. Start with the lowest concentration, and work your way up.
3. Try over-the-counter products containing sulfur, salicylic acid, or resorcinol, which help unplug oil glands by exfoliating the skin. Sulfur medications help inhibit the growth of P. acnes and unclog pores. This can be found as a solo-ingredient in both a prescription and an over-the-counter product. However, most dermatologists believe that benzoyl peroxide is the most effective over-the-counter ingredient for acne.
4. Don’t just spot-treat acne; put the product on all acne-prone areas, too. That can include your entire face (avoid the lips and eyes), your back, and your chest.
5. Go easy on your face. Washing removes oils from the surface of the skin, not from within the plugged ducts. In fact, if you’re too aggressive in your quest for cleanliness, you may end up drying out or irritating the sensitive skin on your face.
6. Wash properly once or twice a day, using a mild tea tree wash, Noxema, or Proactive Solution, and rub lightly with your fingertips and warm water. If your skin is oily, use a soap with benzoyl peroxide for its drying properties.
7. Don’t use brushes, rough sponges, cleansers with granules or walnut hulls, or anything similar on the delicate facial skin. Such things are OK on back & chest areas though.
8. Don’t use oily products, such as hair pomades, oil-based facial moisturizers, sunscreens that contain oil or wax, makeup that isn’t oil-free, or oily cleansers.
9. Use ONLY water-based (oil-free) make-up. Mineral makeup (sold on TV infomercials) is great too.
10. Don’t get a facial. You may end up doing more harm than good.
11. Don’t rest your chin on your hands. Avoid constantly touching your face.
12. Protect your skin from cancer and wrinkles without aggravating your acne by choosing an oil- free sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
13. Don’t worry too much about what you eat, unless you notice a correlation between a particularly oily/fatty food and your skin breaking out. There is some empirical evidence indicating that foods high in oils or fats may worsen acne, but it hasn’t been proven yet.
14. Watch out for excess iodine, which can be found in multiple vitamins and iodized salt. Some doctors believe iodine may encourage acne.
15. Increased exposure to sunlight, & increased exercise, as a result of reduced computer use, may help some people. The UV in sunlight is antibacterial. Also, exercise causes the pores to open up, so that also can sometimes reduce acne.
16. Anti-biotic treatments are warranted by those people that have severe blemishes caused by pimples that are clustered together. This is a long term approach. The types of antibiotics include; but are not limited to: Tetracycline, Minocycline, Doxycycline, Erythromycin, and Bactrim.
17. Hormonal medications such as birth control pills are a way that many women can treat her acne. Some women have acne problems from too many androgens (male hormones) in their system. In order to balance this out, certain birth control pills can be administered that will either reduce the level of androgens circulating in the bloodstream, block the androgens from reaching their cellular receptors, or prevent the formation of androgens all-together.
18. Injectable steroids may be used for a stray, huge acne cyst. The steroidal solution often used for this type of application is called triamcinolone (Kenalog). The good news is that this can be a great quick fix for small isolated acne problems but it cannot be used to treat a widespread acne issue.
19. Antibiotic Topical therapies also work well and are a step above the standard topicals mentioned previously. An example would be Clindamycin or Sodium sulfacetamide.
20. A prescription medication that contains Azelaic Acid works very well for acne treatment. Azelaic Acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid found in grains like wheat and rye.
21. If all else fails, see a doctor about taking Accutane (Isotretinoin is the generic name) to get rid of the acne. This is a last resort option, since Accutane is hard on the liver, is costly, and can have some serious side effects.
If you use conditioner on your hair, wash and condition your hair before you wash your back. Many hair conditioners will cause your back to break out if it is not washed off completely.
Buy Tea Tree Oil body-wash…it’s natural and it won’t dry your skin out. It is sold at "The Body Shop" I’ve used Tea tree oil face wash and toner and so far has worked great on my skin, and it’s also very affordable.
People suffering from mild or moderate body acne, I heartily recommend the Clear Pores System. Hard to treat cases are better left to a dermatologist’s skills, although ClearPores is certainly up to the task.
The best way to treat acne is to cleanse the skin with a solution containing Salicylic Acid and SD Alcohol 40. The ClearPores body and face washes contain these two excellent ingredients, which are accompanied by the well-known Aloe Vera (to soothe the skin and help the healing process), Dandelion Root and Yellow Dock.
See its official site: http://www.clearpores.com/clicks/clickthrough.html?a=150901
Also…keep your body skin clean every day and be careful not to trigger acne or rashes by wearing very tight clothing or heavy backpacks. If you feel your clothing, backpack or purse is causing you skin problems, then start thinking about alternatives.
